Environmental grading in GS1Trade Packaging takes place at the component level.
Packaging can consist of:
In cases where a piece of packaging consists of a main component (e.g., glass) with an integrated component (e.g., a label), the recyclability grading must be done collectively.
Therefore, remember to check that the integrated component is registered under the main component before you begin the recyclability grading. The design criteria for recyclability grading is different for integrated components.
From the dashboard page, click on the Packaging Master Data tab in the menu at the top of the page.
In the left tab, select the desired component to be recyclability graded. In this example, we are using a jar for a jam product.
Click on the Packaging classification tab. If the component has not yet been recyclability graded, the text will appear in yellow with an exclamation mark.
The difference between the two categories consists of whether the packaging is designed to be refilled og reused for the same purpose several times or not.
Specify whether the component is to be sorted as Recyclable, Residual or Hazardous waste.
Descriptions of the different types of waste is found, when each individual category i chosen on the list.
Click Save.
Choose one of the material categories from the dropdown list. Choose the category that best matches the component. In this example, glass.
If you change the material category, click Save to update it, as this will affect the associated design requirements.
Depending on the selected category, you will now see a list of design requirements to be filled out.
Click Edit Details on the right side. Fill in all design criteria. When finished, click Save.
After filling out all design criteria, you can view the results of the recyclability grading. The component is placed at a level: Low, Medium, or High.
The Eco-modulation tab will no longer be indicated in yellow.
Repeat the process for the remaining components, after which the environmental grading will be calculated for all components in your product.
We recommend contacting your packaging manufacturer, producer responsibility organisation, or Dansk Producentansvar (DPA - Danish Producer Responsibility).
